Semiconductor sector upheaval reflected in last year’s US patent assignment stats
By a huge margin, Freescale Semiconductor was assigned more assets than any other entity during 2015, with its 26,002 patents dwarfing second-placed Globalfoundries Inc.’s 14,791. According to ktMINE analyst Megan Rourke, this is accounted for by Citibank’s release of collateralised Freescale patents in preparation for the latter’s $11.8 billion merger with the Netherlands’ NXP Semiconductors.
Intellectual Ventures, LG, Nokia and Samsung among 2015’s most active patent dealmakers
ktMINE analyst Megan Rourke has pointed out a few interesting trends. Nokia Corporation tops the assignor list with 409 discrete assignments during last year. According to Rourke, this is likely to reflect the company’s movement of a large portion of its US patent portfolio to its new Finland-based, R&D and IP monetisation-focused subsidiary Nokia Technologies Oy.
